Training That Impacts Productivity!
Competency-based training emphasizes “performing” rather than just “knowing.”
Regardless of whether training was conducted in a classroom, on-the-job, electronically, or a combination thereof, it focuses on what the learner needs to know and be able to do to perform effectively (achieve the desired results) and efficiently (ensure optimal use of resources).
The outcomes to be achieved are clearly identified and stated ensuring that:
a) The learner knows exactly what he or she is expected to be able to do
b) Trainers, facilitators, and/or coaches know exactly what content is to be developed
c) Organizations know exactly what skills are required and being developed
As the competency-based training approach is assessment-driven, learning progress and milestones are tracked. Learners don’t just ‘sit through’ training but demonstrate use of the learning during various stages of the training program and at the end of it. When a participant has taken an assessment and fails to demonstrate the target competency or competencies, they are expected to undertake further learning or training before being assessed again. This cycle continues until the learner demonstrates full competence in the target area in accordance with evaluation metrics and standards.
This approach ensures more proactive participation and commitment to learning, whilst also ensuring that the initiative is cost-effective, goal oriented, and productive. In these austere times, more organizations should pursue the competency-based training approach for developing their people in order to reduce wastage of valuable resources and ensure a solid return on investment.
